Airport Panel Delays Vote On Shuttle Fee

Bowing to protests against a proposed $2 fee on cabs and shuttles each time they pick up passengers at Lindbergh Field, a committee of the agency overseeing the airport’s finances and operations tabled the matter for at least 18 months.

Jose Hernandez, director of land-side operations for the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said the fee, projected to raise nearly $2 million in revenue annually, would have gone toward the cost of an improved taxi holding lot under construction west of Terminal 2 and for ground transportation operations.

The new $2 million holding lot is expected to be in use by May 1.

Currently, taxi and shuttle operators pay a yearly $200 permit fee to work at the airport, which officials said generates annual revenue of slightly more than $100,000.

In a 3-0 vote March 30, the Airport Authority’s operations committee, which includes Lemon Grove Mayor Mary Teresa Sessom, Xema Jacobson and William Lynch, decided to delay consideration of the proposal.
