Work has started on the $3.5 million partial demolition and reconstruction at 50-year-old Gillispie School in La Jolla.
The school and Bilbro Construction Co., which completed the work, broke ground on the redevelopment site earlier this month.
The project, approximately 22,000 square feet, marks the most dramatic change to the campus in its history.
Gillispie is an independent, nonprofit school located at the south end of Girard Avenue in La Jolla. It has 300 students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth, and will remain open during the renovation.
Work will include the demolition of two apartment buildings on the campus, existing classrooms and administration building. The renovated structure will house classrooms, a new administration area and an improved interior play area. The school’s art and music rooms and library will also be upgraded. The final project will be finished with brick, plaster, stucco and wood trim and trellis work to be consistent with the surrounding neighborhood.
Bilbro Construction’s John Bodie is the superintendent on the project and Mark Irish is the project manager. Don Goldman of Robbins Jorgensen Christopher is the architect for the project.
The project is expected to be complete in the summer of 2002.
