Add This to City’s Acclaim: Bike Friendly

San Diego was selected as the top big city in the nation to ride a bicycle.

Bicycling Magazine named San Diego as the best cycling city among cities with at least 1 million in population, ahead of Chicago and New York.

The overall best city in the country is Portland, the third time it has won the distinction, according to Bicycling.

The Queen City was also ranked No.1 among cities with populations between 500,000 and 1 million.

To determine where to rank cities, the magazine weighed such factors as the number of bike lanes and routes, number of bike racks, city bike projects planned and completed, number of bike commuters, cycling events, bike shops, the quality of a city’s roads and trails, and its climate.

Bicycling said the best cycling cities with populations between 200,000 and 500,000 were Madison, Wis., Tucson, Ariz., and Albuquerque, N.M.

The worst cities in the nation to take a bike ride are Atlanta, Houston, and Boston, Bicycling said.
