March Madness, the annual rite surrounding the NCAA men’s basketball tournament now under way, is coming to San Diego next year from March 15 to 17.
Tickets for the 2001 first- and second-round games at SDSU’s Cox Arena go on sale between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, March 20, at the Aztec ticket office in Qualcomm Stadium, Gate G.
Application forms can also be obtained from the Aztec ticket office or by downloading it from the university’s Web site at (www.goaztecs.com). Tickets for the six-game set are $120.
The tournament will feature eight teams, two of which will advance to the third round or what’s called the Sweet 16. The original field is 64 teams.
Not only is the sports event good for the local economy in filling up hotels and restaurants, it will also bring the city great exposure nationally via television and other media, said Ky Snyder, president of the San Diego International Sports Council.
The last time the NCAA men’s tournament made a stop in San Diego was 1975 when the Sports Arena was the site for the Final Four, and UCLA Coach John Wooden’s final game.
