Solutions for Change to Discuss Homelessness at Friday Event

Elected leaders will join representatives from the nonprofit Solutions for Change on Friday morning to discuss an alternative to the “Housing First” approach to San Diego’s homelessness crisis.

The group says that the Housing First approach does not work.

The event will bring together Supervisor Jim Desmond, El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey, Oceanside Councilman Ryan Keim and Solutions for Change CEO Chris Megison. The leaders will gather for a news conference at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 2 at the County Operations Office at 5520 Overland Avenue in Kearny Mesa.

Organizers said the briefing will offer a critique of the Housing First approach, and push for treatment and accountability tied to housing to address core issues with people who are homeless.

Solutions For Change graduates will join the elected leaders. Solutions For Change is a nonprofit group that has made remarkable strides in combating homelessness. Despite its success, organizers said, Solutions for Change is not eligible for state or federal funding because it does not use the Housing First approach.

In the years following the Housing First implementation in California, organizers said, the state has witnessed a 93% increase in chronic homelessness. Organizers said the statistic shows that the current system, with its lack of accountability, has let down not only the citizens of San Diego but also those enduring the hardships of life on the streets.
