Coastal Commission Appoints Acting Executive Director

The California Coastal Commission appointed Jack Ainsworth acting executive director and discussed the process for hiring a new permanent leader in its Santa Monica meeting March 9.

Ainsworth serves as senior deputy director of the commission and has held that post since 2011. The process to find a new executive director is expected to take at least six months, according to the commission’s Facebook page.

The suggested interim term, according to a document released from the Coastal Commission in its agenda, is until December 8, 2016 or until a new executive director begins work, whichever comes first. The commission can choose to extend the selection process beyond December if needed at a future commission hearing.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ainsworth is a 27-year veteran of the agency and was voted in by the panel, 11-1. Ainsworth replaces Charles Lester, who was voted out Feb. 10 in a private session. The commission voted 7-5 against him despite opposition from the public and private sector at its Morro Bay meeting.
