San Diego County-based Annex Brands, a franchisor of seven brands in the business services, shipping and freight industries, has promoted TanaSue Carpenter to chief financial officer.
Carpenter, who was previously Annex Brands’ vice president of finance, executive director of finance and controller, and initially director of accounting when she was first hired by the company in 2012, formally replaces CEO Patrick Edd, who since 1997 has been doing double duty as the company’s CFO.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to improve and support the franchise system, while working with all departments to develop a cohesive process, designed to save time and increase profitability for franchisees,” Carpenter said. “I see myself taking a more active role in advancing future financial planning, continuing to be forward thinking with long term progress in mind.”
Carpenter, a San Diego native who was raised in the East County city of Santee, earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration with an accounting major from the University of Phoenix in 2003 and an MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2006.
Annex Brand’s history started in San Diego in 1986 when founder Jack Lentz sold the first of many PostalAnnex+ franchise locations. After acquiring more brands, the company eventually rebranded as Annex Brands in 2007.
From the beginning, Lentz had a vision of empowering local ownership, and that vision is still evident in every aspect of the business today, Carpenter said.
As a local packaging and shipping company with franchise locations across the country and internationally, Annex Brands leadership pushes its franchisees to think independently and strive for continuous growth in their local communities.
“When I started as the company’s director of accounting in 2012, we supported five brands,” Carpenter said. “Over the course of my 10 years here, and through two more acquisitions, Annex Brands now operates seven brands, with hundreds of franchise locations across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.”
The company’s growth during her tenure allowed for Carpenter’s professional development as well. In the past decade, she has completed a Certified Public Accountant certification and Certified Franchise Executive program.
“This same support has allowed me to be able to grow our accounting department and become a leader within our franchise system,” she said. “I am honored to share the franchise ownership experience with every single franchise owner in our system.”
Carpenter said that early on, she realized the importance of hard work and determination. She was a single parent at age 17 and worked for 10 years at a local fast-food franchise for 10. She became a certified training manager for that franchise system and was promoted to supervisor, eventually overseeing 10 locations across the county.
“As CFO at Annex Brands, I look forward to empowering others to reach their individual goals and providing my guidance to others as a role model for stability and financial freedom,” Carpenter said. “As a teen parent, stability and financial freedom were imperative, and I‘ve seen firsthand the impact they can have on people. I will continue to also provide my knowledge and equip our franchisees with the tools they need to help them navigate their businesses — especially through economic changes.”
Carpenter, part of a seven-member executive team that includes three women, is the company’s first female CFO – an accomplishment she says means a great deal to her.
Mentoring Other Women
“It allows me the freedom to become a mentor to other women in the company, empower people to push past statistical norms, lift them up and provide guidance,” she said. “Life can be hard, but I hope to be an example that if you push yourself, you can reach your goals.”
Carpenter is also Annex Brands’ second CFO in company history.
“I have a stable foundation to build on,” she said. “I can focus on the future and finding solutions to technological and economic changes.”
Carpenter’s promotion means that Edd, the company’s top executive, can now concentrate on CEO duties. Edd has been with Annex Brands since 1991, starting as the company’s Director of Finance and Administration. He was promoted to CEO in 2018 and had been handling CFO duties for 25 years.
As only the second CFO in Annex Brands history, Edd said Carpenter will take on new cross-departmental responsibilities that prioritize the strategic financial direction of the company’s franchise system.
“For over 10 years, TanaSue has been an integral member of our leadership team leading the Accounting Department,” Edd said. “Her new title recognizes her efforts and contributions and is much deserved.”
