Former Boston Scientific Exec Joins Medical Device Incubator

Evolve MedTech, a Solana Beach-based incubator for medical device companies, recently named Rob Abrams as a partner.

Abrams comes to Evolve with more than 30-year career in medical device development, including 12 years at Boston Scientific.

“We’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Rob over a number of years and recognize him as an exceptionally talented executive with an impressive track record at numerous medical device companies,” Evolve Founding Partner Brad Klos said in a news release. “Rob brings a wealth of expertise and experience working on the operational side and early product development of companies as a venture capitalist as well as leading a successful list of strategic acquisitions and partnerships. We are delighted to have Rob as part of the team.”

Abrams served as vice president of business development for Boston Scientific’s cardiovascular group until 2008. After that, served as CEO of Pulsar Vascular, which made a device for treating brain aneurysms, and was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in late 2016. He also served as an operating partner at Bay Area biomedical investment firm Sanderling Ventures, which invested in ViaCyte, a local company developing a stem cell-based diabetes treatment.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Evolve, an entrepreneurial, visionary and energetic group that I admire,” Abrams said in a news release. “The partners and team are extremely talented and experienced in addressing unmet clinical needs in growth market medical device markets. I look forward to helping Evolve continue to grow.”

Evolve was founded last September, and recently spun out a new company in the cardiology space, Klos wrote in an email. One of its local clients, Xpand Ortho, which makes instruments for knee replacement surgery, was acquired by Florida-based Exactech in March for an undisclosed amount.
