San Diego Businesses Remain Optimistic, Index Finds

San Diego businesses continued to report rising optimism in January, continuing a spike in December that broke six months of declining confidence.

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Business Outlook Index rose to 25 from 23.3 in January. The index is on a -100 to 100 scale, with any positive number demonstrating overall optimism. The index began in August 2012 and has a historical average of about 25.

Businesses expressed greater optimism about future revenues, up to 55 percent of respondents compared to 45 percent, driven by especially confident home and garden companies.

Companies were also asked about expanding the San Diego Convention Center, with 65 percent saying it would be worth the cost. Belief in the Convention Center’s importance to the regional economy was weakest in North County, from Escondido to the Riverside County border.
