Community Effort Puts a Lot of Food on San Diego Tables

Feeding San Diego announced that it raised more $700,371, equating to 2,801,000 meals, in partnership with ABC10, sister station Azteca San Diego 15 and Live Well San Diego during the fourth annual Month of a Million Meals campaign. Exceeding the original goal by more than 1,800,000 meals, the 2016 holiday push included a live telethon and support from several local celebrities. San Diegans donated food, time and funds to support the 1 in 8 San Diegans, including 1 in 5 children, struggling with hunger.

Stacy Rungaitis, director of development and marketing at Feeding San Diego, said the meals will make a difference to the communities that are served each week.

Joel Davis, vice president, divisional general manager at E.W. Scripps, said its teams get very enthused about the project because of the difference it makes in the lives of San Diegans.

Also supporting the campaign were Tom Delonge from Blink 182 and Angels & Airwaves, “Top Chef” contestant Chad White, retired ABC 10 News reporter Bob Lawrence, former San Diego Padres infielder Mark Loretta, chef Claudia Sandoval, Tri-City Medical Center and ESET.

Sharp HealthCare announced it surpassed its goal of raising $100 million for “INSPIRE: The Sharp HealthCare Campaign for Excellence,” a philanthropy campaign launched in late 2010.

The campaign netted $101.7 million before its conclusion Dec. 31, 2016. It was part of a $600 million plan to improve the San Diego-based health system’s infrastructure and enhance its research and technologies.

More than 25,000 individuals and businesses contributed to the campaign by donating to the Coronado Hospital Foundation, the Grossmont Hospital Foundation or the Sharp HealthCare Foundation. Some $3 million raised through INSPIRE helped build the Douglas & Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. The funds also benefited Sharp’s Arts for Healing program, which served 83,000 families and patients, as well as research done at the company’s Neonatal Research Institute at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns.

The San Diego Armed Services YMCA, with the support of Farmers Insurance, provided approximately 350 donated suits to transitioning service members at its community food distribution, the NEX. The Armed Services YMCA distributes food to over 250 military families on the fourth Thursday of every month with the support of the San Diego Food Bank. Farmers Insurance volunteers, including CEO of Farmers Group Inc., Jeff Dailey, supported both events at the San Diego Armed Services YMCA. More than one million military personnel will transition to civilian life in the next couple of years and may not have appropriate business attire.
