The U.S. Navy celebrated completion of a 100,000-square-foot helicopter maintenance facility at Naval Air Station North Island on Jan. 21. RQ Construction was the prime contractor.
The building cost almost $50 million, according to the Naval Air Systems Command.
The building is the first and only facility solely dedicated to the support and service of H-60 Seahawk multi-mission helicopters, Navy officials said. The hangar has 30 bays.
“This building is a generational leap forward in supporting our aviation fleet,” said Capt. Timothy Pfannenstein, commanding officer of Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, in a prepared statement.
The Navy demolished 10 buildings as part of the project. Construction began in late 2012.
