Local San Diego company approved for BBB4Good which elevates purpose-driven businesses

New social responsibility program from Better Business Bureau empowers consumers to choose businesses that support causes

Businesses that prioritize social impact alongside profitability are on the rise. To validate and spotlight this growing sector, Better Business Bureau Pacific Southwest (BBB) launched BBB4Good. BBB4Good is a program that helps purpose-driven businesses earn the BBB4Good Trustmark, which demonstrates to consumers that they are committed to making a positive impact in their communities.

BBB celebrates the most recent BBB4Good verified business, Surf Education Academy in San Diego, that focuses on environmental sustainability practices and ensuring surfing access to all. Surf Education Academy has not only offered premium surf instructions for everyone (including special populations and people with disabilities), but they also prioritize bettering their local community through volunteer efforts with local nonprofits like Challenged Athletes Foundation, at local surfing events and through their Adaptive Surfing program.

“Family and community are at the top of our list of core values. So, when those are my filters for how I make business decisions, we’re designed to make a positive impact,” said Sean Brody, founder and executive director of Surf Education Academy. “In short, becoming a BBB4Good verified business in San Diego truly shows that we care about our community.”

Purpose-driven businesses take a step beyond making a profit and aim to make a difference in the world. These companies are focused on addressing specific social or environmental issues, such as poverty, hunger, or climate change. By focusing on these issues, social impact businesses can bring attention to important causes and mobilize resources towards finding solutions.

“Businesses incorporating a higher purpose in their mission are helping to create more sustainable, equitable and inclusive economic systems. By demonstrating that it’s possible to do good in the world and make a profit, BBB4Good verified businesses can inspire others to follow suit,” shares Kryistyna Hook, Director of Media Relations for BBB Pacific Southwest.

BBB4Good is a new community-forward program that enables trustworthy, purpose-driven businesses to become “verified” by vetting their activities against both BBB Standards for Trust and BBB4Good Standards of higher purpose, community engagement, authentic marketing, and social and/or environmental impact substantiation.

By searching the growing list of purpose-driven businesses on BBB.org, consumers can find businesses that are creating value in their communities and have their dollars impact causes they care about. BBB4Good Verified Businesses will display the BBB4Good Trustmark.

Businesses interested in BBB4Good Verification can apply at bbb.org/bbb4good.
