Feeding San Diego Needs Good Neighbors to Help Provide Food to Families Facing Hunger

With more than 330,000 people facing hunger throughout San Diego County, it’s critical that our community work together to provide the nutritious meals it needs to thrive. Local companies have the power to make a difference by becoming a part of Feeding San Diego’s Good Neighbors program. Since the pandemic began in 2020, Feeding San Diego the county’s leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization has seen the number of people seeking out food assistance climb. With the current economic climate and elevated inflation rate making it impossible for working families to get ahead, the nutritious food provided at food distributions by Feeding San Diego is vital. 

The non-profit provides year-round hunger-relief programming to ensure San Diegans facing hunger have access to nutritious meals. Its programs are made possible by generous donations from the community, including corporate partners who are part of the Good Neighbors program. Whether companies make a corporate gift, volunteer, or create a campaign specifically to help raise funds for the organization, funds directly support families and kids facing hunger in San Diego County.  

“During times of uncertainty, it’s up to each of us to provide lifelines to our neighbors who may need the help more than we do,” said Frances Burnett, senior manager of corporate partnerships at Feeding San Diego.  

Adding to the complexity of the issue is the fact that, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills and food waste accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. According to ReFED, 35% of all food produced in the U.S. is wasted. This food represents nourishment that could have helped feed families in need. Feeding San Diego prioritizes rescuing food as a sourcing strategy because it is one of the greatest solutions to help end hunger, while also protecting the planet.  

It’s important that hunger-relief in San Diego County is fueled by food rescue because hunger is not a sourcing problem, it’s a distribution problem. The food the Feeding San Diego network rescues is the same food that can be purchased at the grocery store or a restaurant. Food rescue requires immediate action Feeding San Diego’s sourcing team receives unexpected calls daily from food donors who have donations to give, quickly. Food is perishable, businesses must adhere to sell by dates, and American consumers expect only the best when shopping at the grocery store. All these factors create an environment that necessitates food rescue. By partnering with local and national food donors, Feeding San Diego has the infrastructure in place to provide hunger-relief efficiently while mitigating the negative impact on the environment caused by food waste.

Feeding San Diego’s Good Neighbors program recognizes companies and community groups that commit to helping end hunger through food rescue. With an annual contribution of $2,500 or more to Feeding San Diego, organizations can be part of the Good Neighbors community. Every dollar donated to Feeding San Diego helps provide two meals to a neighbor facing hunger.
