Better Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Southwest (BBB) proudly awarded five scholarships to high school students for their winning essays on “The Importance of Character and Ethics.” Held annually, the contest encourages students to share a personal experience about doing the right thing when they face an ethical dilemma.
2023 Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship Winners:
- First Place of $1,500: Olivia Ngo from Mira Mesa High School
- Second Place of $1,250: Maryam Mohamed from Hoover High School
- Third Place of $1,000: Pablo Mora from Chula Vista Learning Community Charter High School
- Fourth Place of $750: Dariel Lucio from San Ysidro High School
- Fifth Place of $500: Jillian Rudolph from El Capitan High School
First place winner Olivia Ngo shared that she declined to help a coworker who wanted her to clock in for his shift when he wasn’t in the mood to come to work.
“Ultimately, I am proud of my decision to defend honest work that night. Although it may have only been one dinner shift at a restaurant, it was an honest and right choice to make,” said Ngo.
