San Diego County’s only Black and veteran-owned and operated storefront bakery —Hey Sugar! — will officially open Thursday morning in downtown San Diego.
The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and will include a host of community, civic and elected leaders.
The new bakery, located at 101 Park Plaza, Suite 102, is known for its “homemade” banana pudding.
Chan Buie, owner of Hey Sugar, will be joined at the event by Assemblymember David Alvarez , Jordan Marks from the San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Office, San Diego City Councilmember Vivian Moreno, San Diego civic leader Shane Harris and representatives from the San Diego Central Black Chamber of Commerce.
In 2009, when Buie was serving her country in the U.S. Navy, she was also serving her friends and family delicious food inspired by her childhood days living with relatives in the South.
Upon returning from her final deployment in September 2020 with 20 years of active service, she set her sights on making her culinary dreams a reality.
Encouraged by the rave reviews from her family and colleagues, Buie began to focus more of her off-time on cooking.
Now with her vision and passion, she takes on the new mission of officially launching Hey Sugar’s main location, which will be San Diego’s only Black and veteran-owned store front bakery.
Thursday’s event will also include the announcement and more details about a second Hey Sugar! location Buie plans to open in the area in the coming weeks.
