GreatCall, Insurer Partner to Offer In-Home Monitoring for Seniors

Just months after Best Buy bought San Diego-based GreatCall Inc. for $800 million, the company struck another big corporate partnership with a health insurance company. For the next five years, GreatCall will provide in-home monitoring services for high-risk seniors through Senior Whole Health of Massachusetts, a subsidiary of Magellan Health. The companies announced the deal on Oct. 17.

Best known for its mobile phones marketed to seniors, such as the Jitterbug, GreatCall has been making strides into the connected health space. With Magellan, the company will use an in-home monitoring system called Lively Home to measure daily activities, including steps and sleeping. Then, it will use predictive analytics to catch anomalies that could point to future changes in health.

Scott Latimer, chief medical officer of Senior Whole Health, said the program would help the company better manage care and reduce unnecessary hospitalizations.

“Our mission is to enrich seniors’ lives with the help of technology,” GreatCall Chief Commercial Officer Bryan Adams said in a news release. “Working with Magellan, we believe this partnership will give their team the most effective tools to support their commitment to provide preventive care whenever possible and enhance the quality of life for all participants.”
