Jewish Federation of San Diego County Names New CEO

The Jewish Federation of San Diego County, a Kearny Mesa-based nonprofit organization, has named Michael Jeser its new CEO.

Jeser will succeed Michael Sonduck, who retired in June after 12 years with the organization, on Aug. 27.

The Federation’s local programs include its Aging in Community initiative for older adults; chaplaincy service for those who are ill, in crisis or nearing the end of life; and Community Teen Initiative for high schoolers.

Jeser joins San Diego’s Federation from the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, where as director of financial resource development he oversaw the organization’s fundraising campaigns for three years and created its flagship leadership development and mentoring program for young leaders.

He previously served in roles with Jewish community centers, summer camps and as executive director of University of Southern California Hillel for four years.

Prior to 2013 San Diego’s Federation was primarily an umbrella organization, which allocated funds to other Jewish organizations. That year it announced the start of a shift toward a more active role, as an organization that would collaborate with other Jewish groups to serve community needs.

The Federation reported raising nearly $6.3 million in 2017, of which 83 percent was spent on its programs. The remaining 17 percent went to fundraising, management and administration.
