Lease Gives Law School Right Environment for New Approach

Thomas Jefferson School of Law has signed a long-term lease for two full floors of space in the 24-story office tower at 701 B St.

Details on the terms of the lease were not disclosed.

The building’s owner — Emmes Realty Services — recently completed a multimillion dollar renovation of the lobby and outdoor plaza.

Thomas Jefferson Law School will have its own entrance to the building and a private elevator to its offices.

The law school is moving from its campus at 1155 Island Ave., in East Village as part of its “Move Forward” plan put in place after the American Bar Association in November put the school on probation, in part because of financial issues.

The school is planning to make the move in September.

At 571,333 square feet, the 701 B St., location will be about one-third the space the school has in the eight-story Island Avenue building.

By moving to a smaller site, law school officials said in a statement that they would reduce overhead costs and have more money to reallocate for student scholarships.

“Repositioning with smaller classes will afford students more one-on-one attention and support from faculty and administration, helping better prepare students for the practice of law from their first year through graduation,” school officials said.

Downsizing also will put the school in a better financial situation to meet its goal of getting off probation, officials said.

Tom van Betten and Casey Sterk of Cushman & Wakefield’s San Diego office represented Thomas Jefferson in the transaction. Derek Hulse and Philip Roberts of Cushman & Wakefield represented Emmes.
