Dr. Alexander Khalessi has been tapped as chair of the Neurosurgery Department at UC San Diego Health.
He will also serve as chief of neurosurgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Neurosurgery Department physicians -- 19 faculty, 14 residents, 16 staff, and four clinical fellows -- cover UC San Diego Health hospitals in Hillcrest and La Jolla, Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, Rady Children’s Hospital and are involved in extending the reach of UC San Diego Health through the Clinical Integration Network.
Khalessi, who led efforts at Jacobs Medical Center to expand its neurosurgical capabilities, succeeds Dr. Bob Carter. He also helped generate national recognition of UC San Diego Health in cerebrovascular care with comprehensive stroke certifications in Hillcrest and La Jolla.
He received his medical education from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
