Biotech Cos. Put $1.4B Into Property Sales Market

If there ever was any doubt that biotech companies have been investing big time in San Diego, a report out this week by the commercial brokerage firm JLL erased it.

Since 2010, there have been about $1.4 billion in 4.4 million square feet of property sales to biotech companies in the submarkets of Torrey Pines, University Town Center, Sorrento Mesa, and Sorrento Valley, JLL reported.

University Town Center led with $587 million, followed by Sorrento Mesa at $503 million, Torrey Pines at $315 million, and Sorrento Valley at $71 million.

Most of that property was bought by three landlords – Alexandria Real Estate, Biomed Realty, and HCP.

Alexandria Real Estate owns the most.
