GA Aeronautical Maps Wildfires

The California Air National Guard’s 163rd Attack Wing put an MQ-9 unmanned aircraft to work over Northern California earlier this month to gather intelligence on how the catastrophic wildfires were progressing.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. builds the MQ-9, and though it also goes by the ominous names of Predator B and Reaper, it is very much a reconnaissance asset. The aircraft carries sophisticated sensors that can see through smoke to detect what’s happening on the ground. As of mid-October the MQ-9 had mapped 77,000 acres, helping firefighters decide where to place their resources.

The 163rd Attack Wing makes its home at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County.

Also in mid-October, Poway-based GA-ASI announced some initiatives in South Korea.

It signed a memorandum of understanding with Huneed Technologies Co. Ltd., a move that positions Huneed to become a key in-country strategic supplier for GA-ASI in South Korea.

The Poway business also signed an MOU with the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Seoul. That will hasten the day when remotely piloted aircraft such as those from the Predator family can fly in South Korean civil airspace, GA-ASI said.
