The U.S. Navy awarded Northrop Grumman Corp. a $15.2 million contract modification to integrate specialized radar equipment into its Fire Scout unmanned helicopter.

Also included in the contract is non-recurring engineering work.

The radar is the ZPY-8A/N Osprey model from Leonardo-Finmeccanica. It will go on the larger of the two Fire Scout models, which is a Bell 407 helicopter modified to fly autonomously.

Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC)’s unmanned systems programs are based in Rancho Bernardo. The bulk of the radar work will be performed in Texas and Alabama. The project is expected to end in 2020.

The Naval Air Systems Command of Patuxent River, Maryland awarded the deal, announced Oct. 16.
