The U.S. Navy awarded BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair an $8.8 million contract modification covering shipyard work to fit out the future USS Portland. The Portland is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship which has not yet been commissioned.

The same contract covers post-shakedown availability of a sister ship, the USS John P. Murtha.

Work on the Portland is expected to be done by October. The Pentagon set a February deadline for work on the Murtha.

BAE Systems will provide program management, planning, engineering, design, liaison, scheduling, labor and procurement of incidental material in support of the work.

NAVSEA, the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., awarded the work. The Pentagon announced the contract Nov. 21.
