LRAD Corp., which makes mass notification systems and other loudspeaker-like devices, said it received a $528,000 order from SGS Canada, which plans to install the equipment at an industrial site.
By linking the system to avian radar and broadcasting sounds (warning tones and predator calls), the buyer hopes to shoo birds and other wildlife away from tailings ponds at an oil sands operation.
The Rancho Bernardo company says there are upward of 200 LRAD systems deployed for such purposes at large mining sites.
Separately in April, LRAD said it received a $1.6 million order for mass-notification systems from an unnamed oil and gas company in Eurasia. Shares of the Rancho Bernardo company trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol LRAD.
