An urgent-care facility offering only orthopedic care is set to open March 16 in Carlsbad.

Direct Orthopedic Care (DOC) said its new location at 6125 Paseo Del Norte will treat fractures, sprains and ligament tears seven days a week without an appointment.

The Carlsbad location is the company’s first in California. Founded in 2014, DOC is headquartered in Plano, Texas, and has several other locations, all of them in either Idaho or the Lone Star State.

DOC touts its services as more affordable than those available in emergency rooms. It estimated its total price for X-rays and a splint at $500, after contractual adjustment by a major insurer. That’s about a quarter the cost of going to an ER, it said.

“At Direct Orthopedic Care, there is no facility fee and we strive to be in-network with all insurance providers to ensure co-pays and out-of-pocket charges are kept to the lowest amounts possible,” the company’s CEO, Dr. David Hassinger, said in a news release.
