Southwest Airlines Co. plans to begin nonstop service between San Diego and Tampa, Fla., starting on Jan. 8, 2018, the Dallas-based carrier announced.
A company statement said the year-round flights will be offered once daily, with more information at Southwest.com.
This will be the only direct service to Tampa from any airline at San Diego International Airport, where Southwest is the largest carrier in terms of overall flights offered.
In related airport news, Lufthansa has set a March 2018 start date for its previously announced direct flights between San Diego and Frankfurt, Germany. Year-round flights will be offered every day except Wednesdays and Fridays, with more information at LH.com.
Lufthansa will use the 279-seat Airbus 340-300 aircraft, and its local flights to Frankfurt will be co-marketed and sold in conjunction with ticketing network partner United Airlines.
Lufthansa is headquartered in Cologne, Germany, and Frankfurt is its largest hub. This will be the first service ever offered in San Diego by Lufthansa, and the service will provide the only direct year-round flights to continental Europe.
A Lufthansa subsidiary, the Swiss-based Edelweiss Air, recently began seasonal service between San Diego and Zurich, and competitor Condor Airlines started local seasonal service to Frankfurt.
