TuSimple, a Chinese-American company with offices in Beijing and San Diego, has received a California DMV permit to test its autonomous vehicle technology.
It is the first San Diego company to get such a permit, a TuSimple representative said, noting that the majority of the 33 permits issued so far by the state Department of Motor Vehicles are for Northern California companies. TuSimple’s Southern California peers include Faraday & Future Inc. of Los Angeles.
TuSimple is developing a self-driving truck.
The San Diego business said it plans to test its system on a trip between San Diego and Tucson at the end of June. The tests will include a human driver behind the wheel, the company said.
