San Diego International Airport will be the nation’s first to offer airport-wide gate delivery service of food and retail items, under a program being developed with two technology providers and slated to launch this summer.
A statement from San Diego County Regional Airport Authority said the airport is partnering on the service with Houston-headquartered Grab, which makes a mobile ordering application, and Orange County- based AtYourGate, which operates an in-airport personal shopping service for travelers and flight crews.
Airport officials said the service is currently in development as part of San Diego International’s Innovation Lab, announced earlier this year and geared to integrating new technologies at the airport to streamline travel services. The lab is housed within the airport’s former commuter terminal.
Officials said one of the lab’s first projects was a request for proposals for development of a mobile app to order, purchase and provide delivery of food, beverages and retail items from businesses at the airport. The service is geared to travelers who might not otherwise take advantage of concessions due to time concerns.
Participating airport food and retail vendors have not been announced.
