Suja Life Has What Venture Capitalists Like

San Diego-based Suja Life LLC, which makes organic, cold-pressed juices and other beverages, is the second most well-funded venture capital backed food and beverage startup.

That’s according to CB Insights, which uses big data tools to gather and analyze private company data.

As of May 2017, Suja had disclosed a total of $196 million raised, CB Insights reported.

Suja’s investors, according to CB Insights, include Alliance Consumer Growth, Boulder Brands Investment Group, Evolution Media and actors and angel investors Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto. Coca-Cola acquired a minority stake in the company in 2015.

Hampton Creek, which makes plant-based egg substitutes, was the only food and beverage startup to have raised more, with a disclosed total of $240 million.

CB Insights’ May list of the most well-funded VC-backed food and beverage startups, which featured 15 companies, included one other cold-pressed juice maker, Juicero (No. 6, $100 million raised).

The list, which was dominated by companies focusing on healthy, plant-based foods and drinks, also included Blue Bottle Coffee (No. 5, $116 million), drinkable meal company Soylent (No. 8, $72 million) and Califia Farms (No. 12, $50 million), which makes almond milks and coffee creamers.
