ViaSat Inc. will supply the European air carrier Finnair with Wi-Fi connectivity under a deal announced on Sept. 1. Financial terms were not disclosed. ViaSat is prime contractor and is working with Eutelsat Communications to deliver an internet connection to Finnair passengers.
Under the recently announced deal, Finnair will equip its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft with ViaSat (Nasdaq: VSAT) satellite communications gear. The Helsinki-based carrier uses the single-aisle Airbus A320 on its short-haul flights in Europe.
Finnair plans to begin installing the equipment in May, targeting completion by June 2018.
In other news, Carlsbad-based ViaSat announced that it and Eutelsat are in customer trials with El Al Israel Airlines. The companies expect full retail service to begin before the year is over.
Shares of Eutelsat trade on the Euronext Paris under the symbol ETL.
In February, ViaSat and Eutelsat announced an agreement to create a joint venture combining Eutelsat’s current European broadband business with ViaSat’s broadband technologies and consumer ISP (internet service provider) business expertise.
As of Sept. 1, the companies continued to work toward the completion of the transaction, ViaSat said in a statement.
