On the most southwestern edge of Rancho Santa Fe off San Dieguito Road is the Del Mar Country Club, one of the county’s finest golf courses and communities.

“The Del Mar Country Club is known to be one of the most exclusive locations in San Diego,” said Mary Raser, a real estate agent for Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty. “The community is an enclave of extraordinary custom homes, filled with breathtaking views, a championship golf course, a 55,000-square-foot club house, tennis courts, swimming pool, fitness facility, a plethora of social events and a kid’s playground.”

Raser, who raised four kids in Rancho Santa Fe, knows the area well. Raser moved to North County 18 years ago, after a successful career on the East Coast rehabilitating historically significant homes. In addition, she is an experienced interior designer educated at the nationally acclaimed Parsons School of Design in New York City.

planned community. The architectural style is eclectic and includes Mediterranean, Traditional and Country French architecture.

Raser’s listing at 14487 Strawberry Road is down a cul-de-sac on a nearly one-acre lot with just five other homes. It is listed at $3.65 million, down recently from $3.995 million.

“Strawberry Road is truly a one-of-a-kind, custom, French Country estate, completely renovated and remodeled in the past two years, exceedingly well-crafted and designed,” Raser said. “It has sweeping views, privacy, elegance and many custom upgrades including a saltwater pool/spa, new custom kitchen, leaded glass windows, slate roof and oversized game/pub room. This estate is the epitome of refined elegance and the Rancho Santa Fe Lifestyle.”

The home has six bedrooms, a first floor master suite and five baths with 6,250 square feet. There are numerous fruit trees, a large dog run, an outdoor fire pit, an entertainment system and separate staff quarters.

The Del Mar Country Club golf course and club house was built in 1991. The homesites were sold and developed during the years following and have views of the golf course, clubhouse, rolling hills, the ocean and the surrounding community.

The country club was snatched out of bankruptcy in 1993 by noted San Diegan Madeleine Ann Pickens and then-husband Allen Paulson, founder of Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., according to a Nov. 12, 2012 San Diego Business Journal feature on Pickens and the Del Mar Country Club. Pickens, whose father was a famed English golf course designer, retains her last name from her former marriage to oilman and financier, T. Boone Pickens. Her father, Bill Baker, developed courses throughout Europe. She is now the sole owner of the club and her improvements and business savvy have returned it to profitability and its place among the top golf courses in the country.

The golf course was designed by legendary architect Joseph Lee, who has nearly 150 golf courses to his name in the U.S. and internationally.

There aren’t a lot of homes in the community currently for sale and public records indicate only about four have sold during the last 12 months. An example of the most recent sale is a home at 14424 Bellvista Drive that sold for $2.45 million. It is a five-bedroom, five-bath home with 5,306 square feet. The listing agent was Candace Leeds-Sears with Pacific

Sotheby’s International Realty. The buyer’s agent, also with Pacific Sotheby’s, was Kaitlin Kaiser. It closed escrow on July 12.

Among those currently on the market is a house at 14419 Bellvista Drive for $2.99 million. Bellvista is off Clubhouse Drive, also on a cul-de-sac.

Johnathan Ferreira, of the Ferreira Group for Coastal Premier Properties, has the listing for the four-bedroom, five-bath, 4,018-square-foot-home on a half-acre lot.

“It’s a French Country, single-story home on a large lot with golf course views,” Ferreira said. “The interior is very country feeling. You’ve got wood beam ceilings with drop truss ceilings, antique white cabinetry and hand-scraped custom-finish hardwood flooring throughout.”

Solana Beach-based Mitchell’s Floor Coverings did all of the new flooring.

Ferreira said the interior was remodeled about a year and a half ago and included a full re-landscaping of the gardens with drip systems.

In addition to a spacious great room, there is a large office with ample workspace behind glass French doors that is covered in rich walnut on the ceilings and walls and includes an inviting fireplace. There are large windows on each side of the room flooding the room with natural light.

The expansive outdoor space is very inviting and includes a stacked stone fireplace surrounded by comfortable seating, a private Jacuzzi and a full outdoor kitchen and seating area overlooking the expansive views.

In the SDBJ 2012 story on Pickens, she attributed her success with turning the Del Mar Country Club around to being the sole owner and decision maker, she said. “Without boards or other people holding shares in the club, administration gets pretty simple.”
