The San Diego Tourism Marketing District (TMD) has begun accepting applications from organizations for the potential funding of sales and marketing programs within the city of San Diego.

A statement from the nonprofit marketing district said organizers of tourism-related events must demonstrate the ability to generate incremental room night stays at hotels that are included in the assessed district, in addition to generating a clear return on investment on TMD dollars.

Application requirements and other information are on the district’s website, sdtmd.org, in the section marked “Contractors and Funding Applications.” Application packets must be submitted to the TMD office by Dec. 9 at 5 p.m.

Officials said the marketing district will be announcing application workshops in coming weeks. Past programs funded by the district have included San Diego Beer Week, San Diego Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon, and college football bowl games.

The marketing district is a mutual-benefit corporation created by the city to fund local tourism promotion through an assessment of 2 percent on room bills collected from hotels in the district. The assessment is separate from the city’s 10.5 percent transient occupancy tax on hotel room bills, which goes toward general city services.
