Kearny Mesa-based Mitek Systems Inc. reported net income of $600,000, or 2 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $8.5 million in its second quarter of fiscal 2016, which ended March 31.

In the second quarter of 2015, the company reported net income of $500,000 on revenue of $5.7 million.

Mitek gained fame by creating software that lets a person hold a paper bank check up to a smartphone’s camera and, by photographing it, deposit it to their bank account.

A more recent technology called Photo Verify uses a mobile device to confirm the authenticity of a government identification card.

Mitek also makes a product that lets a person hold a driver’s license up to a smartphone camera and then automatically fills out the fields in credit card applications, loan origination documents and other complicated forms. The feature lets people more easily use their smartphones to fill out long questionnaires.

Mitek has 101 employees split between the United States and the Netherlands.
