David W. Andrews has been named president of National University, effective April 1.

Andrews is the current dean and a professor of the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University. National University, California’s second-largest private, nonprofit university, has more than two dozen campuses and one of the largest schools of education in the country.

Andrews will succeed Michael R. Cunningham, who has served as president of the university since 2013. Cunningham will expand his role as chancellor of the National University system.

“I look forward to creating strong partnerships both within the university and with community groups and organizations that share our dedication to providing adult learners with access to an affordable, high-quality education that has the power to transform individual lives and our regional economies,” Andrews said.

While leading Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education, Andrews helped the school receive the No. 1 ranking two years in a row from the U.S News & World Report for graduate schools of education. He averaged $10 million in fundraising each year.

In addition to his current position at Johns Hopkins, Andrews also is a professor at the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at the university’s Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Prior to Johns Hopkins, he helped merge the College of Education with the College of Human Ecology at Ohio State University. He also founded the Center for Learning Excellence during his 10 years there.

Andrews held professorship positions and was head of Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Oregon State University before coming to Ohio State.

He has achieved numerous educational awards and been published in many scholastic journals. Andrews serves on a variety of community service boards. He is a founding member of a teacher preparation program, Deans for Impact. Andrews holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Auburn University and a master’s degree from Kansas State University in child development. He earned a doctorate in child development from Florida State University.

The National University flagship was founded in 1971 and serves 30,000 students annually, offering more than 100 programs through campuses in California and Nevada, as well as online.
