United Way Recognizes Top-Notch Volunteers King, Vance

United Way of San Diego County announced Maureen King and Jonathan Vance as award winners for their consistently outstanding community leadership and volunteerism. They recently were honored during the nonprofit’s 95th birthday party at Cohn Restaurant Group’s new Coasterra. The award is named for James Mulvaney, who maintained involvement in numerous nonprofit boards and organizations for 50 years.

King has a long history of service to the San Diego community. She has served on, as well as chaired, numerous volunteer boards and currently sits on the board of trustees of Mercy Hospital Foundation, the Kraemer Endowment Foundation and Mingei International Museum. King is also chairwoman of the Museum Trustee Association and the immediate past chairwoman of Scripps Mercy Hospital Foundation Board.

Vance has made a significant and sustained contribution to United Way as a volunteer. For the past eight years, Vance has served United Way as both chairman and as a member of a variety of the organization’s boards. He has also been a member of the nominating, investment and major giving committees for United Way and a Healthway Trust board representative. He is currently managing director for MedDx Capital Advisors in San Diego.

The Office Depot Foundation donated 3,500 sackpacks to San Diego-area kids in the 15th year of the national award-winning program that makes a difference to 3.7 million children. The nonprofits, schools and agencies that received sackpacks include Bayside Community Center, Copley-Price Family YMCA, Pazzaz Inc., Promises2Kids, San Diego Unified School District/Board of Education and Words Alive. The sackpacks do not have any Office Depot Foundation or Office Depot logos or markings.

Jewish Family Service of San Diego received a $12,166 grant from the County of San Diego’s District 4 Neighborhood Reinvestment Program. The grant will purchase furniture for the counseling lobby and children’s waiting area of JFS’s new Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus, which is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in December 2015.

JFS CEO Michael Hopkins said, “Studies have shown comfortable, welcoming lobbies and children’s waiting areas are important components of a successful counseling experience.” JFS provides counseling to individuals and families with mood disorders, in need of refugee resettlement assistance, or struggling with stressful, traumatic life events such as domestic violence, breast cancer, or loss of a loved one. These services are available to all San Diegans in need, regardless of religion, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, ability, gender identity/expression, or sexual orientation. Visit jfssd.org.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced it has awarded $320,000 in grants to 22 local nonprofits providing affordable housing and community development services in San Diego. The grants are part of Bank of America’s broader philanthropic strategy focusing on housing, jobs and hunger to help individuals and families in San Diego lead stronger financial lives.

Market president for San Diego, Rick Bregman, said, “Bank of America supports highly impactful nonprofits in the region that are on the ground working to bring critical resources into underserved communities.”

The organizations receiving funding include: Community HousingWorks, Habitat For Humanity, Housing Opportunities Collaborative, San Diego Regional EDC, South Bay Community, Local Initiatives Support Corp., Zoological Society of San Diego, Old Globe Theatre and the San Diego Natural History Museum.

The Spanos family and the San Diego Chargers continued their tradition of support for youth health and fitness by awarding $250,000 in grants to San Diego County schools. The Chargers Champions program’s donations exceed $5 million to local schools since its inception in 2000.

“Schools throughout California need our support,” said A.G. Spanos, President-Business Operations. “The main goal of our program is to provide students with the necessary means to live a healthy lifestyle through physical fitness.”

The seven schools that received grants to improve physical fitness, athletic or nutrition programs on school campuses were Granite Hills High School, El Cajon; Sweetwater High School, National City; De Portola Middle School, San Diego; Laurel Elementary School, Oceanside; Gage Elementary School, San Diego; San Elijo Middle School, San Marcos; and Porter Elementary School, San Diego.
