SDMAC Executive Director Stepping Down

Larry Blumberg, executive director of the San Diego Military Advisory Council, will retire from that position at the end of the year, the organization announced on July 24.

The council, known for short as SDMAC, is a politically influential nonprofit that lends support to the military and San Diego’s military-related industry. Its monthly breakfast meetings at Naval Base Point Loma are a place where military and business leaders come together.

The organization plans to conduct a search for a new executive director.

Blumberg has been executive director for SDMAC since 2005; the organization was founded in 2004.

He is a U.S. Navy veteran. He worked as a surface warrior officer and attained the rank of captain.

SDMAC’s political advocacy helped defeat a 2006 ballot proposal to place a civilian airport at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and a 2008 proposal to put civilian uses at the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal — the Port of San Diego facility that frequently handles military cargo.

SDMAC also compiles an often-cited annual study on the military’s economic impact to the greater San Diego area. Direct military spending amounted to $25.2 billion during the Pentagon’s 2014 fiscal year; the number takes in procurement, military salaries and veteran retirement and benefits.
