San Diego hockey fans, your long wait may be over.

Reports out of Virginia say the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League and an affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League was sold to the Ducks, who will relocate the team to San Diego.

Several published reports, including one from the Virginia Pilot, said the Ducks along with the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, and several other NHL franchises have been trying to establish a Western division of the AHL. Most of the NHL teams have minor league franchises playing on the East Coast.

One other report said if the Ducks purchase the Admirals, they would likely be relocated and play at the Valley View Casino Center in the Midway area.

That was the same arena where the legendary San Diego Gulls played for decades until their owners, the Hahn family, pulled the plug in 2006.

While competing in the West Coast Hockey League, the Gulls captured five of the league’s eight championships.

The Admirals owner said the AHL will discuss creating a Western division at the league meeting Jan. 25 in Utica, N.Y.
