UCSD Takes Top Spot Again in Ranking for Doing Public Good

The University of California, San Diego earned top marks for its contributions to the public good, earning the number one spot on Washington Monthly’s annual rankings list for the sixth straight year.

The magazine rated universities based on their success recruiting and supporting low-income students, commitment to research and how well they encouraged service among students, including how many participated in the Peace Corps or ROTC units.

Forty-five percent of UCSD students receive Pell Grants, and the school spends more than $1 billion a year on research.

The University of California, Riverside was ranked second, while Texas A&M University was third.

“Compared to barely public institutions like the University of Virginia, sixty-third on our list, where only a few more than one in ten students are poor enough to qualify for the federal Pell Grant, top-ranked UC San Diego and UC Riverside enjoy international reputations for scholarship while enrolling racially and economically diverse student bodies,” the magazine wrote.
