The U.S. Navy awarded a $31.8 million contract to General Dynamics Nassco to perform post-shakedown work on one of its newest ships, the USS America.
During the post-shakedown availability, the General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) shipyard plans to make repairs and improve the design of the ship, all in preparation for final contractor trials. The Navy expects work to be done by November.
The USS America is an amphibious assault ship with a large deck for aircraft. It was commissioned in October.
The Southwest Regional Maintenance Center in San Diego awarded the contract modification on April 22.
