Rankings Paint a Picture Of San Diego

San Diego is in the spotlight, making a lot of interesting lists these days … Consumer rating website betterdoctor.com ranks our region No. 25 based on the ratio of primary care doctors to the population. Greenville, S.C., tops that list with a doc for every 377 residents. We had one doc for every 1289 residents … Women’s Health magazine and online review site Yelp name San Diego among the 20 most up-and-coming “Social Cities,” based on six months of data mined from Yelp reviews. San Diego ranks in the group for its culture, but interestingly not for food. The results, with a story, appear in the October edition of the magazine … Alas, despite our proximity to the border, San Diego doesn’t make the grade as one of the best places to be an Hispanic entrepreneur, as ranked by financial website WalletHub. The top honor goes Pembroke Pines in sunny Florida. San Diego came in at 107, and Chula Vista was ranked 53 … Better news on the education front. University of California, San Diego comes in at No. 8 on U.S. News & World Report’s most recent rankings of the top public universities. University of California, Berkeley tops the list of public universities. The University of San Diego ranks in the nation’s Top 100 Best National Universities … For the second year, the San Diego Night Market returns to Convoy Street Oct. 4. The street fest runs from 4 p.m. until late evening, organizers say, with as many as 15,000 people attend. The Asian Pacific American Coalition is the lead organizer behind the event, and interested vendors may apply at sdnightmarket.com … The San Diego Regional EDC schedules a tour of manufacturing sites in the region Oct. 4 in celebration of National Manufacturing Day. Manufacturing accounts for 22-plus percent of the county’s overall payroll, featuring 7,500 businesses and 169,000 employees. Signups at mfgday.com … Despite vocal opposition from a small minority, PR firm (W)right On Communications conducts a new poll and finds that 74 percent of the county’s residents want to keep SeaWorld San Diego’s nightly fireworks, which have been a tradition for the past 30 years … Crime beat: Sandag’s new midyear report on crime found that property crime dropped by 13 percent while violent crime decreased 1 percent for the first six months compared to the same period last year. Criminal Justice Research Director Cynthia Burke says she’s not sure why we’re enjoying historic drops in select crime categories … Finally, this person of note: Michael Kinsman, a former UT-San Diego financial writer who also found time to launch the San Diego Blues Festival starts up a new weekly Saturday night blues program on KSDS-FM.
