Bill Aims to Keep Fishiness Out Of Fish Business

Senate Bill 1138, targeting the deliberate mislabeling of seafood, is one recent piece of lawmaking that could impact the local fishing industry, not to mention anyone involved in the food delivery chain. The legislation is now on the governor’s desk. Americans spend more than $80 billion a year on seafood, said the bill’s author, state Sen. Alex Padilla, a Democrat from Los Angeles. But we don’t always receive what we order. During the session, he pointed to an independent study that found 52 percent of fresh fish sampled in Southern California and 38 percent of fish sampled in Northern California were mislabeled by sellers and restaurants. The new law, if OK’d by the governor, would make it unlawful for any person to knowingly sell or offer to sell at wholesale or retail any fresh, frozen, or processed food fish or shellfish without identifying the species of food fish or shellfish by its common name. It would also be illegal to mislabel seafood as “farmed” or “wild caught,” and its country of origin … Worth noting, in case you missed the news: Dave Titus, who helped build the San Diego Venture Group into the region’s top networking group for entrepreneurs and investors, steps down for a business development role at a local law firm. Mike Krenn, credited with launching the seed investor group Tech Coast Angels and nonprofit tech business group CommNexus, becomes the new SDVG president. Though not an investor he is certainly an investing expert, due to his years of experience in the venture world, according to sources. Krenn also launched VenturePipeline.com which matches startups with capital. Meanwhile, SDVG’s next breakfast meeting is set for Sept. 24 in La Jolla, and will address the issue of mergers, acquisitions and IPOs.
