Virgin America has cut ties with SeaWorld Entertainment, removing the theme parks from the airline’s rewards program, according to PETA. The animal rights group claims its lobbying efforts were instrumental in the airline’s decision.
The group said it would be targeting Virgin Group, a separate company from Virgin America, to also sever its ties with SeaWorld.
In August Southwest Airlines announced it would be ending its promotional partnership with SeaWorld which included decorating some of its aircraft with images of orcas and penguins.
SeaWorld has been facing increasing criticism after the airing of “Blackfish,” a documentary claiming to show mistreatment of killer whales by the company.
SeaWorld recently announced that it would double the size of the killer whale enclosure at its San Diego park and said it was pledging $10 million in matching funds for killer whale research, and will embark on a partnership with prominent research programs focused on ocean health.
