San Diego Port Unaffected by Work Slowdown So Far

The reported work slowdown at the Los Angeles and Long Beach container ports is having no effect on operations at the Port of San Diego, according to a port spokeswoman.

The Pacific Maritime Association has reported “a coordinated series of slowdowns” at certain Washington, Bay Area and Los Angeles County ports, though the International Longshore and Warehouse Union has said that any slowdown is due to factors other than labor, including management decisions.

“As of now, there is no work slowdown at the Port of San Diego, and the slowdown at several other West Coast ports has had no direct effect on us,” said the local port spokeswoman. “We are watching the situation closely to see how it develops.”

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle containerized cargo, while San Diego handles specialty cargoes, including bulk materials and roll-on roll-off cargo. The ships that handle containers of Dole fruit from South America have a fraction of the capacity that container ships calling at Los Angeles and Long Beach have.

“No disruptions are reported by our maritime tenants or stevedores,” said spokeswoman Tanya Castaneda. She added that port officials are monitoring conditions at ports that handle similar cargoes, such as Port Hueneme.
