VCs Add M2M To the Equation At Venture Summit

The San Diego Venture Summit set for June 19 features “machine-to-machine” expert Daniel Obodovski, the former director of business development at Qualcomm Inc. and author of “The Silent Intelligence: The Internet of Things.” In case you haven’t heard, the Internet of Things, wherein billions upon billions of devices, such as household appliances and automobile components, are melded into the global information network, is promising to be the next big thing in technology. The half-day venture event will also feature appearances from the so-called “COOLest companies” that are starting up in the region. And audience members will participate in a live Skype interview of the ever-outspoken Tim Draper, one of the Silicon Valley’s pioneering VCs who grew the firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson into an investing powerhouse. He’ll no doubt talk about his controversial proposal to split California into six states, an idea that has both been panned as well as praised by those on both sides of the issue. State Board of Equalization Vice Chair Michelle Steel, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and Carlsbad’s City Hall are sponsoring a small business seminar and expo June 10. The event will be held at Carlsbad’s Dove Library. The keynote topic will focus on how to expand your business through government contracting. Signups plus other information is available at reddoor.biz. … Finally, Jon Coupal, the head of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, rolled into town May 28 to oppose splitting Proposition 13 in two, so that commercial properties can be taxed at higher rates than single-family homes. Coupal spoke at a breakfast sponsored by San Diego Taxpayers Association, which releases a study that opposes moves in Sacramento for a “split roll” that would allow taxing commercial properties at higher rates.
