Opera Lays Off 13 in Cost-Cutting Move

The revived San Diego Opera, which recently rescinded an earlier decision to disband, said it laid off 13 people, or about a third of its full-time staff as part of a cost-cutting strategy to meet a reduced budget for its 2015 season.

The nonprofit organization had 40 full-time employees and contracts with some 400 others during its season, generally from January to April.

In the following weeks, the opera said it will implement other expense reductions, including pay cuts, and moving its offices to another building that will save about $400,000 a year.

The opera’s board voted to stage a 2015 season with a budget of $10.5 million, down 40 percent from an earlier plan. The group will put on three operas instead of four, and two gala concerts.

Keith Fisher, the opera’s chief operations officer, said the staff reductions were unfortunate because every employee made important contributions to keeping the opera alive.

Carol Lazier, the opera’s president, said, “The former business model of San Diego Opera was unsustainable, and this is one of the measures we must implement to make it sustainable.”
