Competitor Group Announces Leadership Changes, Names Abeles New Chief Executive

Competitor Group Inc., the San Diego firm that manages the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Series and publishes four national endurance sports magazines, hired David Abeles, the top honcho at TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Co., as its new chief executive.

Abeles, 42, said he was attracted to the job for both the enormous business potential the company has, and by its people.

“This is a great group of people here and a terrific company with lots of horsepower,” Abeles said.

Competitor Group also named Barrett Garrison as chief financial officer, and Keith Kendrick as chief marketing officer.

Competitor was acquired in December 2012 by Calera Capital, a San Francisco-based private equity firm for an undisclosed price. The firm installed an interim CEO and CFO last year at Competitor after the resignations of Scott Dickey and Steve Gintowt.

Abeles had two stints with TaylorMade, the first as a salesman and later as its executive vice president and general manager starting in 2007, heading up the subsidiary of Adidas with a global workforce of about 1,500 people including some 1,000 in Carlsbad.

He also was the vice president of sales and marketing for Cobra Golf.

Last year, TaylorMade did $1.8 billion in worldwide sales. Competitor doesn’t reveal revenue, but has 230 total employees including 180 in Miramar.
