UC San Diego to Lead State Brain Research Initiative

The University of California, San Diego is taking the lead in a statewide initiative to drive research into the rapidly evolving area of neurotechnology, thanks to $2 million included in the new state budget just signed into law. UC San Diego — which is deeply involved in efforts to better understand healthy brain function, as well as to pursue better ways to diagnosis and treat brain disorders — will be part of Cal-Brain, or the California Blueprint for Research to Advance Innovations in Neuroscience. This complements the federal BRAIN Initiative advanced by President Barack Obama in April 2013. Ralph Greenspan, director of the 1-year-old on-campus Center for Brain Activity, said neurotechnology will become the next big employment cluster for the region. … Clairemont-based distributor Coffee Ambassador is celebrating its 45th birthday this year. The family-owned business got its start in 1969, and it continues under the direction of the sister-and-brother team of Barbara Curtis Smalley, president, and Sean Curtis, CEO. They said they began in the business by helping their parents package coffee stirrers for a 1 cent per box. … Meanwhile, talking about the business behind that cup of Joe, San Diego dentist Thomas Fitzpatrick launched Cura Coffee Co., a retailer of fair-trade coffees imported from Central America and other caffeinated locales around the globe. … The next monthly breakfast meeting of the San Diego Venture Group is set for July 24, when members will hear a presentation on building better company boards of directors. Lawyer Robert Kornegay from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati will moderate the discussion with participants David Hale of Hale BioPharma Ventures and Jeff Lunsford, CEO of digital marketing startup Tealium. The former San Diego mayor will continue to appear on his radio show weekday afternoons on KFMB. … Finally, bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter have become the first to participate in a new beacon technology to drive customers to their businesses. The technology, a GPS-based app developed by Happy Hour Pal in Honolulu, enables customers with mobile devices to find happy hour specials and save some dough. Happy Hour Pal said it is launching in San Diego alongside local tech and foodie events like Taste of Gaslamp, Tech Week San Diego and Oysterfest. Till next week.
