‘Fortune Tellers’: Panelists Present The VC Outlook

2013 proved to be a boon year for professional investors as the value of initial public offerings on Wall Street hit $11.25 billion, the highest total since 2007. So, what’s the outlook for 2014? Local investors and entrepreneurs will gather to find out Jan. 23 at the Marriott Del Mar for the San Diego Venture Group’s VC Outlook 2014 event. Presenters “gazing into the crystal ball” will include Bobby Franklin of the National Venture Capital Association, Scott Tierney of Google Ventures and Carol Gallagher of Frazier Healthcare. Details and tickets are at sdvg.org. … Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus was expected in town Jan. 9 to brief important local business and military leaders face to face, according to press aides. Mabus was scheduled to address the San Diego Military Advisory Council’s monthly breakfast meeting and to talk to General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard employees about what’s ahead for new Navy ships. … Meanwhile, the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers USS Kidd and USS Pinckney weighed anchor at Naval Base San Diego Jan. 7 for independent deployments to the Western Pacific Ocean. The two ships, each with more than 300 sailors, will conduct theater security cooperation and maritime presence operations with partnering nations during the deployment, according to a news release. … The San Diego Sunroad Boat Show will run Jan. 23-26 at the recently updated Sunroad Resort Marina on Harbor Island. This is the fifth year for show, which is 20 percent larger than last year, thanks to the steadily improving economy. For information, go to bigbayboatshow.com. … SeaWorld San Diego unveils its new flagship store, the first to open at the park’s new Explorer’s Reef undersea-themed attraction. Guests can shop in the new open-air market concept under giant coral formations for gifts and collectibles “inspired by marine life,” a news release said. The new area in the park is scheduled to open in March. … The county’s Office of Emergency Services on Jan. 6 demonstrated an improved SD Emergency mobile app for Apple and Android devices that enables users to share disaster plans and send notifications when food, water and other items have been assembled for emergency kits. Target stores are donating two-person camping tents to the first 3,000 people to use the app to make preparations for the next emergency. Finally, the National City Tourism Marketing District reports hotel occupancy taxes collected in 2013 by the city’s 12 hostelries were up more than 13 percent compared with 2012. And there’s even better news for this modest metropolis. The San Diego Tourism Authority issued a report stating that tourism was up 17 percent in National City in 2012 compared with 2011 — the highest increase of any city the county for the 12-month period.
