Big Data Makes For Big Forum Topic at UCSD

Members of the MIT Enterprise Forum San Diego will examine the impact of the big data phenomenon when they gather March 12 at the University of California, San Diego. Navid Alipour, managing partner of Analytics Ventures, will moderate a panel that will include speakers from local companies BrightScope, Certona and SDG&E on how the collection of big data will impact our personal and professional lives. Find more details and registration at sdmitforum.org. … More than 75 percent of Del Mar’s residents surveyed recently told the Del Mar City Council that they favor building a new City Hall, and they think the site should also be used for off-hours public parking — in short supply in and around that coastal community. Eight-four percent, or 425, of those surveyed said they would like to see a new structure in the downtown area. Meanwhile, the city continues its lengthy planning process. … Time for an update: While California continues to suffer through its worst drought ever recorded, construction continues on the $1 billion desalination plant immediately south of the village in Carlsbad on the Pacific Ocean. That’s according to coverage in a recent edition of The New York Times. When completed, most of the estimated 50 million gallons of freshwater to be produced daily will flow into the pipelines of the San Diego County Water Authority. That’s about 7 percent of the region’s daily need for water in the region, which can’t come soon enough if the statewide drought remains in full force in 2016, as some predict. … Mark your calendars: The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. scheduled its annual meeting for May 13 at SeaWorld’s Mission Bay Theater. The dinner is underwritten by Point Loma Nazarene University. The student-run group also holds its first-ever “hackathon,” which is designed to inspire innovation and creativity in the digital generation, according to a news release.
