Economist to Address Housing Outlook for 2014

Selma Hepp, a senior economist with the California Association of Realtors, will offer an outlook on housing for 2014 at the San Diego-area trade group Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors’ next meeting March 6 in Chula Vista. Hepp is a recognized expert in the latest academic research in housing, as well as international housing markets. The public is invited. Details are at psar.org. … Celebrity sighting: Dave Hester, who became somewhat famous for his tough-talking personality on the cable television show “Storage Wars,” was recently seen hawking used tools, household electronics and clumps of old clothing at Kobey’s Swap Meet, held Saturdays and Sundays in the parking lot of the Valley View Casino Center. Hester sued the popular show last year claiming the auctions were staged for the most part and is seeking damages for what he claimed was wrongful termination. Now, since he lost in court, he’s apparently back where he started, peddling odds and ends to passers-by at regional flea markets. Kobey’s weekend gathering is an institution founded by Monte Kobe in 1976. It’s now run by his daughter, Kimberly Kobey-Pretto, and her husband, Chuck Pretto, who is the president of downtown San Diego Rotary Club 33. … A mystery angel, or seed investor, has been added to the San Diego Venture Group’s breakfast program Feb. 27 at the Del Mar Marriott. The angel will offer insights into the phenomenon of crowdfunding, along with a panel of other experts, including Jon Carder, founder and CEO of San Diego-based startup Mogl. For details, go to sdvg.org. … The California New Car Dealers Association in Sacramento reports that new vehicle registrations statewide jumped 12 percent in 2013 compared with 2012, outpacing U.S. sales growth of 7.2 percent last year. The rest of the state performed better than San Diego, which came in at 10 percent for the year. Meanwhile the association said the industry is plagued with a shortage of used cars because of the sales drought in 2008-2010. … Finally: San Diego ranks No. 3 among the nation’s top 10 fittest cities for adults 50 and older, according to a ranking released by online matchmaking service OurTime.com. The website bills itself as the largest online dating site for the older single set. Boulder, Colo., came in at No. 1, while Sarasota, Fla., came in at No. 10. The number of OurTime.com members who describe themselves as “fit” increased 31 percent over the past year, underscoring the fact that staying in shape is important for this age group, especially in California.
